Flores Fires Back at Rigondeaux: My Father Was Not a Runner

Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux 17-0-0 (11 KO’s) and Moises ‘Chucky’ Flores 25-0-0 (17 KO’s) will collide on February 25 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. They will battle for the IBO and WBA super bantamweight titles as part of the Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland undercard.

Flores was very surprised when advised about the recent statements from Rigondeaux, which appeared on BoxingScene.com. Rigondeaux stated that Flores should “stand up and greet his daddy.”

Flores laughed at the statement and fired back – “As I remember, my father was not a runner. I am sincerely curious to know if Guillermo Rigondeaux will stand firmly in the center of the ring and is willing to stop to fight like a man on February 25 in Texas.”

“You can’t talk about being firm [and standing in the ring to fight], if in every Rigondeaux fight we’ve seen the spectators yell at him for being boring, [yelling at him] to stand firm and fight and stop running all over the ring … Frankly this is funny, how can a runner that HBO and boxing fans don’t want to see, talk about [standing to fight]… this is unusual.”

Rigondeaux also stated – “Flores is just an interim champion, a title that means nothing.”

“I respect each opponent and Rigondeaux is one of the best. I am training to be in my best condition, so I show my respect. I don’t want to disrespect anyone, he is a fighter just like me and he must do his job. I’ll be there in the center of the ring and I wish Rigondeaux would come to that fight with the same idea; people do not pay to see anyone running,” Flores said.

“If Rigondeaux says that I must be firm [by standing to fight], I promise that is what I will do on February 25. I want to know if he is ready to do the same as me.”
